Epic Day

July 30, 2024 24.0 miles 7:30 am – 6:00 pm Others: Yoda Wow, what an amazing day this has been.  It was clear – no rain.  We walked by more of tge same kind of mountains as the Chinese Wall and I think it was even better.  Maybe because the weather was so good, but I don’t know, it was pretty amazing.  We stopped and talked to multiple people that were out here on trips of one kind or another.  Horse back with mules for all their stuff, just hiking with a guide, and hiking by their selves.  We hiked …

Chinese wall

July 29, 2024 23.3 miles 7:30 am – 6:00 pm Others: Yoda A good walk today even though there was a very light rain all day long.  We stopped probably a little sooner than we would have because the notes from other hikers in FarOut made it sound like this was the last decent place to camp for the next 7 miles, and 30 seemed like just a bit more than we wanted. Got to see the Chinese Wall much of the day – it was pretty cool.  Also saw two sets of other hikers going south, nice to talk …

Long day

24.5 miles 7:30 – 5 ish I’m unsure exactly when I stopped because I stopped for dinner.  I was planning to continue on the three or 4 miles to water then to a camp site.  However, it started to rain, and so I just called it.  I expect this rain will pass over in the next hour or so, but I was pretty tired anyway. I just heard someone walk by, bummer I missed them.  they probably didn’t see me because I’m back in the trees.  I’m not sure if they were N or S bound.  It’s rare that I …

Ok, now really into the Bob

July 28, 2024 1:00 pm – 7:00 pm 14.5 miles Others: Yoda We left Augusta or tried to leave at about 10.  Waiting at the edge of town for a ride back to the trail, we had plenty of locals stop and tell us sorry but they couldn’t take us today as they were only going up the road a little bit.  They were all very friendly.  Finally, at about 12:00, Frank stopped and asked us if we needed a ride.  I forgot to say that we saw him as we were headed out to try for a ride.  He …

Into The Bob

7 or 8 miles 7:00 am to 10:00 am Others here: Yoda Got into Benchmark pretty easily and then almost immediately got a ride down the dirt road to Augusta.  She was a nice young girl from Georgia working for the forest service for the summer. Resupplied, hopefully not too much this time, ate lunch and dinner, and now getting ready for bed. Tomorrow, we will head out for the Bob (Bob Marshall wilderness), which should be about 5 days.

Long but good day

28.4 miles 7:00 am – 8:00 pm Others here: Yoda It was a long but not too difficult of a day.  Yoda wanted company after about a month by himself and hiked all day with me at my pace.  The only other people we saw were two southbounders, Rocket and Booster.  They were very friendly, and we shared info of what’s ahead. I think I’m too tired to write much else.  We are at a good spot for the night with a stream bubbling in the background.  I think we are through with the long stretches without water, which is …

First Northbounder

10:00 am – 6:30 pm 18 miles Others here: Yoda I met my first Northbounder today, Yoda.  But I’m getting ahead of myself.  I left town fairly early and got a ride from a transplanted Californian, but only half way to the pass.  I tried for probably 30 minutes before a couple turned around and took me the rest of the way.  They were out doing some work for the university of Montana – nice folks. The hike was a little easier for me than it has been up to now.  There were still lots of climbs because today was …

Town Day

5.4 miles 6:50 – 8:00 am In town, in Lincoln, now and taking it easy in a little hotel.  It’s actually pretty nice.  I’ve already got food for the next section, about 4 days, washed my clothes, eaten lunch, and now I’m just sitting in the room watching some silly movie. The next section should take about 3 days, and I expect to do a half day at both ends.  So it should be four.

Lots of water

19.5 miles 7:30 am – 4:30 pm No one else here I stopped about 5 miles short of town.  Would have gone a few miles closer, but it looks like the trail is just on the mountain tops the rest of the way.  I am here as well, but at least there are some trees and fairly flat ground. I saw several south bounderst today.  It’s always nice to stop and chat for a moment.  This morning was fairly easy, and I only carried 2 1/2 litters of water.  But around 11, I reached the spring and decided to carry …

Water is so important

23.8 miles 7:30 – 7:00 pm Others here: man I forget their names. One older guy finishing up this section southbound and a younger guy heading south It was a long and slow day, especially up to lunch.  I got water within the first hour and that was it until camp tonight.  A little over a gallon.  Heavy carry…  I also saved a litter and a half just in case there was no water here.  Thankfully, there was so I drank that up before getting more. I had dinner at Stemple Pass, where there is a bathroom and trash can.  …
